A running toilet is something most of us deal with at least once in our lifetimes. It’s a very irritating occurrence because of the constant sound. However, it also means there’s constant water flow that will, of course, show up in your utility bills. Also, water is a very precious non-renewable source, and preserving it for the future is absolutely crucial. So, stopping this running toilet is important for both your budget and the environment. Fortunately, there are a few simple methods that may usually solve the problem without the need for major extra steps. Here are some of the common reasons behind running toilets and how you can fix them. Of course, if even after trying these methods you still don’t see any results, it would be best to contact a professional plumber.
One of the most common reasons behind running toilets is the flapper-related issues, and one of these is the flapper chain. Normally, when you press the toilet handle for flushing, inside the tank, the flapper chain lifts, and as a result, the water can enter. However, if the chain is too long or too short, the way the flapper is positioned inside the toilet can be faulty, causing a runny toilet. Luckily, altering the chain is simple. First, remove the tank lid and flush the toilet to see how the chain moves. If it cannot lift the flapper properly, it's too short. If it gets under the flapper, then it’s too long. If the chain is too short, relocate the hook that connects it to the handle a few links up. If the chain is too lengthy, shorten it by moving the hook back a few links and reattach.
If the issue isn’t solved after fixing the chain or if the problem doesn’t seem to be related to the chain in the first place, then you might be dealing with an old fill valve that needs replacement. To replace the fill valve, turn off the water supply and then empty the tank by flushing. Open the tank and unscrew the locknut to remove the old fill valve. If you’ve already bought the new fill valve at this point, all you need to do is install the new fill valve. Afterwards, adjust its height and float level to match the toilet’s needs. Secure it with the locknut you put aside, reconnect the water supply, and turn the water back on.
Another common issue behind running toilets can be related to the fill tube. The fill tube is a small plastic tube that links the main fill valve to the overflow pipe. It’s relatively easy to identify. Even when the tank is full, the fill tube should stay above the water line. So if the water is above the fill tube when it’s full, this can cause water to run. To fix this, adjust the fill tube position so that it is higher than the water level within the overflow tube. It should be securely fastened to the top edge of the overflow tube, and you can stabilize it with a clamp or a zip tie. Afterwards, turn back on the water supply and flush the toilet.
